The Zale Corporation is an American jewelry retailer, incorporated in Delaware in 1993. The principal executive offices are located in Coppell, Texas. Zale operates approximately 2,270 retail locations throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as online. It is a member of the Jewelers Board of Trade and The Diamond Trading Company, a subsidiary of De Beers. In October 2012, Zale Corporation announced that it would be acquired by Signet Jewelers for $690 million. The Zale Corporation was founded in 1924 by William Zale and Ben Lipshy. The company began as a small jewelry store in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1934, the first Zales Jewelers was opened in Dallas, Texas. The company went public in 1956 and expanded rapidly throughout the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1971, Zale's acquired the diamond supplier Star Diamond Corporation, which helped the company become more vertically integrated. In 1990, Zale faced a hostile takeover attempt from BATUS Inc., the American subsidiary of British-based BAT Industries. However, the takeover attempt was unsuccessful and Zale remained an independent company. In 2000, Zale acquired the fine jewelry retailer Sterling, Inc. for $1.4 billion. The acquisition helped make Zale the largest jewelry retailer in the United States.
