About White Castle
White Castle is an American regional hamburger restaurant chain with 377 locations across 13 states, with a majority of them in the Midwest. It has been generally credited as the country's first fast-food chain. Walter Anderson had the idea to sell burgers for five cents each from a fixed menu of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, soft drinks, pie, and coffee, served via a small window where customers placed their orders. Anderson opened the first White Castle restaurant in Wichita, Kansas in 1921. In 1933, White Castle expanded to the East Coast by opening a restaurant in Newark, New Jersey–the first fast-food chain to do so. White Castle was one of the first companies to air television commercials, beginning in 1953. In 1955, Time featured White Castle in an article called "The Burger chain that made history". In the 21st century, White Castle has suffered from increased competition from other fast-food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King. The company has responded by expanding its menu and adding more non-hamburger items such as chicken strips and fish sandwiches. In 2012, White Castle was ranked as the fifth-largest hamburger chain in the United States with sales of $494 million. White Castle was founded in 1921 by Walter Anderson and Edgar Waldo "Billy" Ingram. Anderson operated four stands in Wichita, Kansas, under the name White Castle System. He chose the name "White Castle" after seeing a castle-shaped sign while on a trip to Europe. The Wichita restaurants were successful, and in 1924 Anderson decided to franchise the concept. He sold franchises to four men: Otto W. Fricke, Nathan R. Rice, Frank E. Menches, and Henry A. Sweatt; the first White Castles opened in Toledo, Ohio, and Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1924. By 1929, there were White Castles in Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, and Illinois. The first location outside the Midwest was in Memphis, Tennessee; it opened in 1936.
