About The LEGO Store
The LEGO Group is a privately held company based in Billund, Denmark. The company is still owned by the Kirk Kristiansen family who founded it in 1932. It is famous for the manufacture of LEGO brand toys. The company's flagship product, Lego, consists of colourful interlocking plastic bricks accompanying an array of gears, figurines called minifigures, and various other parts. Lego pieces can be assembled and connected in many ways to construct objects including vehicles, buildings, and working robots. Anything constructed can then be taken apart again, and the pieces used to make other objects. The company has passed down through four generations of the Kristiansen family and is currently owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder. The LEGO Group has repeatedly faced criticism for the use of child labour in its factories, particularly in China. It has been awarded the Environmental Achievement of the Year award. The company was founded on 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen. LEGO is an abbreviation of the two Danish words "leg godt", meaning "play well". In 1934, his company came to be called LEGO Mursten, or "LEGO Bricks". The LEGO Group began expanding the product line in 1949. In 1953, LEGO began producing plastic toys rather than wooden ones. In 1955, LEGO released their first set, "Town Plan", with ninety-six pieces. It was very successful and marked the beginning of a long series of town-themed LEGO sets. In 1957, LEGO began producing minifigures, which are small plastic figures that represent people or animals. The first LEGO sets with minifigures were "Castle", "Pirates", and "Space".
