About Qantas Airlines
Qantas Airways Limited is the flag carrier of Australia and the country's largest airline by fleet size, international flights, and international destinations. It is the world's third-oldest airline still in operation, having been founded in November 1920; it began international passenger flights in May 1935. The Qantas name comes from "QANTAS", an acronym for its original name, " Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services ", and it is nicknamed "The Flying Kangaroo". Qantas is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance. Headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales, the airline's main hub is at Sydney Airport, and it also has hubs at Melbourne Airport and Brisbane Airport. As of March 2014, Qantas had a 65% share of the Australian domestic market and carried 14.9% of all passengers traveling in and out of Australia. Various subsidiary airlines operate to regional centers and on some trunk routes within Australia under the QantasLink banner. Its subsidiary Jetstar Airways provides services on most domestic and international routes. Qantas also owns Jetconnect, a regional airline operating in New Zealand. Qantas has a long history of public service and was one of the few airlines to operate during the Great Depression. It has also been involved in numerous industrial disputes and pioneered various innovations in aviation, such as the introduction of the Business Express in May 1979, which was the first domestic business-class air service in Australia. The airline has an extensive domestic network in Australia and flies to international destinations in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. It is a founding member of the Oneworld alliance and holds equity stakes in a number of domestic airlines including budget carrier Jetstar Airways and regional carrier QantasLink. Qantas has been named the safest airline in the world by AirlineRatings.com for four years in a row (2013-2016). It has also been ranked as the second most trusted brand in Australia by Readers Digest for six years in a row (2011-2016).
