OnStar Corporation is a subsidiary of General Motors that provides subscription-based communications, in-vehicle security, emergency services, turn-by-turn navigation, and remote diagnostics systems. OnStar services are activated when the vehicle is turned on and can be deactivated at any time. OnStar Corporation was originally founded in 1995 as a joint venture between General Motors, Electronic Data Systems, and Hughes Electronics. In 2011, GM alone owned 100 percent of the company. As of 2015, there were approximately six million subscribers. OnStar’s services are divided into three categories: security, safety, and navigation. Security features include stolen vehicle assistance, remote door unlock, and OnStar Smart Driver, which uses data collected from the vehicle to provide coaching on driving habits. Safety features include automatic crash response, emergency services, and roadside assistance. Navigation features include turn-by-turn directions, live traffic updates, and hands-free calling. OnStar also offers hands-free calling, remote start, and Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities. Remote start allows drivers to remotely start their vehicles from up to 200 feet away. OnStar’s Wi-Fi hotspot provides a fast and reliable connection for up to seven devices. In 2014, OnStar began offering Amazon Prime shipping benefits to subscribers in the United States. This benefit allows OnStar subscribers to receive free two-day shipping on millions of items from Amazon.com.
