About Northwest Airlines
Northwest Airlines Corp. was a major American airline founded in 1926 and absorbed into Delta Air Lines, Inc. by a merger. The merger, approved on October 29, 2008, made Delta the largest airline in the world until the American Airlines-US Airways merger on December 9, 2013. Northwest continued to operate under its own name and brand until the integration of the two airlines was completed on January 31, 2010. Northwest was headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport After World War II it became one of the "Big Four" domestic airlines after World War II (the others being United Airlines, American Airlines, and TWA). In 1986 it was the seventh largest domestic airline in the country with a fleet of 97 aircraft. Following deregulation in 1978 it became one of the first airlines to operate a hub-and-spoke system connecting various cities in the United States with international flights to Canada, Mexico, and Japan. The airline expanded its international flights to include destinations throughout East Asia, Europe and the Middle East. In recent years, the airline increasingly shifted its focus to becoming an international carrier while still maintaining a strong presence in its domestic market. In 2005, Northwest was the world's fifth largest airline in terms of domestic and international scheduled passenger miles flown and the United States' ninth largest airline in terms of domestic scheduled passenger miles flown. Northwest was one of the first U.S. carriers to operate flights to China and also had codeshare agreements with a number of other airlines including Air France, KLM, Korean Air, ANA and Asiana Airlines.
