About LOT Polish Air

LOT Polish Air Lines (Polish: Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT S.A.) is the flag carrier of Poland. Based in Warsaw and established on 29 December 1929, it is one of the world's oldest airlines still in operation. With a fleet of 41 aircraft, LOT Polish Airlines flies to over 60 destinations worldwide. It is a member of the Star Alliance. LOT Polish Airlines has its origins in the Aviation Department of the Ministry of Communications, founded on 28 December 1928 to operate domestic and international air services from Poland. The first aircraft, a French-built Potez 25, was delivered to the department on 19 February 1929. The first flight took place on 2 March 1929 between Warsaw and Grodno via Vilnius; it was operated by pilot Stanisław Skarżyński and carried no passengers. The airline's second aircraft, a Polish-built Lublin R-XIII, was delivered on 11 March; the aircraft were used for training. LOT operated its first international service on 1 August 1929 between Warsaw and Prague; it used a Potez 25 again. The airline soon started regular services to other cities in Europe, including Brussels, Bucharest, Hamburg, Oslo, Kyiv, and Moscow. The first domestic route started on 1 July 1930 between Warsaw and Gdańsk; by the end of the year, LOT had also introduced services to Wrocław, Poznań, Katowice, and Kraków. In addition, a cargo service between Warsaw and Kraków was launched. LOT continued to expand its network in the following years. The airline launched services to İzmir (then Smyrna) in 1935, Belgrade and Lwów in 1936, Tallinn in 1937, and Istanbul and Beirut in 1938. The outbreak of World War II in 1939 forced LOT to suspend all operations. All of the airline's aircraft were confiscated by the German authorities and used for military purposes.
