About Jack in the Box
Jack in the Box is an American fast-food restaurant chain founded February 21, 1951, by Robert O. Peterson in San Diego, California, where it is headquartered. The chain has over 2,200 locations, primarily serving the West Coast of the United States. Restaurants are located in 19 states and three Canadian provinces. Jack in the Box's parent company, Jack in the Box Inc., is a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol "JACK". The company was founded by Robert O. Peterson at San Diego's Broadway and C Street (now Broadway and 5th Avenue). Jack in the Box was the first restaurant to be built with a drive-through window. It was designed by La Jolla architect Charles F. Lummis, who also designed several other restaurants for Peterson. The original location closed in the late 1970s and has been replaced with a condominium complex. A vintage photo of the first Jack in the Box location is displayed inside company headquarters. In early 1952, Peterson sold the chain to Richard K. Gibson and Frank Taft for $2 million. The new owners increased the number of locations by opening several new restaurants in San Diego County over the next few years. In 1959, Jack in the Box opened its 100th restaurant, and by 1960 the chain had grown to include 38 locations in California and Arizona. In 1963, the chain was sold to Ralston Purina for $18 million. The company expanded Jack in the Box rapidly during the 1970s, opening about a new location each month at one point. By 1978, Jack in the Box had 2,000 restaurants in 47 states. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Jack in the Box faced intense competition from fast-food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King. To stay competitive, the company engaged in a variety of marketing campaigns and introduced new menu items, including salads and chicken sandwiches.
