About History Channel

History is an American pay television network and flagship channel owned by A&E Networks, a joint venture between Hearst Communications and the Diversified Agency Services division of Advertising Age, a subsidiary of Omnicom Group. The channel originally focused programming on biographies, documentaries, and historical fiction series; it has since expanded to include a variety of reality and scripted series targeting a wider range of history-related topics. A&E's history dates back to 1984, when cable media company HBO launched a channel called The History Channel. In February 1995, The History Channel completed a $250 million merger with the A&E Television Networks group, which was owned by Disney and Capital Cities/ABC. The resulting company was then renamed A&E Television Networks. The network had a limited schedule at launch, running only from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Eastern Time on weekdays and Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.; time-shifted repeats of programs aired during the overnight hours filled the remaining time slots. A&E Television Networks expanded the History Channel brand in 1997 by launching three spin-off channels: The Military History Channel (now History en Español), the Discovery Civilization Channel (now Discovery Family), and the now-defunct History International. The success of the channel's original programming prompted A&E to target the history genre more broadly in an attempt to capitalize on its popularity. The result was the launch of a second spin-off channel, History2 (now Viceland), in August 1996. In 1999, A&E Television Networks struck a deal with Discovery Communications to rebrand The Learning Channel as the History Channel's sister network, now known as The History Channel2.
