It is the 19th largest bank in the United States by deposits. Citizens Bank was founded in 1828. It offers a variety of personal and business banking products and services including checking, savings, mortgages, loans, and credit cards. In 2016, Citizens Bank was ranked number 23 on Forbes' list of America's largest banks. Citizens Bank operates more than 1,200 branches and 3,200 ATMs across 11 states under the Citizens Bank and Charter One brands. The bank also has offices in India, Poland, and the United Kingdom. Citizens Financial Group was founded in 1828 as the High Street Bank in Providence, Rhode Island. The bank's original name was changed to Citizens Savings Bank in 1871 and then to Citizens Trust Company in 1903. In 1918, the bank merged with Union Savings Bank and then changed its name to Citizens-Union Savings Bank and Trust Company. The bank expanded rapidly in the 1920s, acquiring several smaller banks in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In 1982, the bank's name was changed to Citizens Bank of Rhode Island. In 1988, Citizens Bank expanded outside of Rhode Island for the first time with the acquisition of First National Bank of Maryland. This was followed by acquisitions of several other banks in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut over the next few years. In 1998, Citizens Bank was acquired by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). RBS expanded Citizens Bank's operations significantly, growing the bank's branch network and acquiring new banks in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. In 2015, RBS announced its intention to sell Citizens Bank, and the bank was acquired by The PNC Financial Services Group.
