Asics is a Japanese multinational corporation which produces sportswear. The name is an acronym for the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano. Products manufactured and marketed by Asics include footwear, clothing, and accessories for running, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, Crossfit and other sports. ASICS also manufactures and markets shoes and equipment for tennis, golf, baseball, rugby union, track & field/athletics, and hiking. The company was founded in 1949 as Onitsuka Co., Ltd by Kihachiro Onitsuka. It has since evolved from a domestic producer of basketball shoes to a multinational corporation. ASICS began as Onitsuka Tiger, founded by Kihachiro Onitsuka in Kobe, Japan. He soon came up with the name ASICS for his company in 1977 after consulting a dictionary and finding that ASICS was an acronym for the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano, meaning "A sound mind in a sound body". In 2006, the company was acquired by Fuijitsu and now operates as a subsidiary. ASICS have been working with the International Paralympic Committee since 1999 and are the Official Sponsor and Official Supplier of the Paralympic Games. Asics is also a partner of the World Para Athletics.
