About American Airlines

American Airlines is a major US-based airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, within the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is the world's largest airline when measured by fleet size, scheduled passengers carried, and revenue passenger mile. American together with its regional partners operates an extensive international and domestic network, with an average of nearly 6,700 flights per day to 350 destinations in 50 countries. American Airlines is a founding member of the Oneworld alliance, the third largest airline alliance in the world. Regional service is operated by independent and subsidiary carriers under the brand name American Eagle. In 2013, American Airlines merged with US Airways to form the new American Airlines Group. The airline now operates out of ten hubs located across the United States, with its main headquarters in Fort Worth. Through the airline's parent company, American Airlines Group, it is publicly traded under NASDAQ: AAL. American Airlines was started in 1930 via a merger of 80 different airlines. The two companies that merged were Robertson Aircraft Corporation and Colonial Air Transport. The former was first formed in Missouri in 1925, while the latter was established in New York in 1926. American Airlines is credited for being the first airline to serve all 48 contiguous states within one year, as well as the first to offer a regularly scheduled coast-to-coast service. In 1934, American Airlines introduced the first air hostess uniforms, which were designed by Eleanor Lampl. The following year, the airline also became the first to offer in-flight movie screenings. During World War II, American Airlines played a vital role in the war effort, transporting troops and supplies across the country. After the war, the airline continued to grow and innovate, introducing such features as the first fully automated ticketing system in 1946 and the first electronic flight information system in 1954.
